To drive safely in M30 tunnels you just need to know a number of restrictions and guidelines that we will explain below.

Not every vehicle can use this road and you have to remember that manoeuvres such as changing direction or reversing are not permitted. Visibility is lower in tunnels, so you need to drive carefully.

Safety advices for driving in M-30 tunnels

Pay attention to these restrictions and recommendations on how to drive safely in M30 tunnels. If you fail to follow them you may be fined and lose points on your licence.

Traffic restrictions in M-30 tunnels

The following are not allowed on the M30:

  • Pedestrians
  • Cyclists
  • Mopeds
  • Vehicles under 50cc
  • Animal-drawn vehicles
  • Vehicles with a maximum speed lower than 60km/h
  • Freight vehicles weighing more than 7.5t
  • Vehicles wider than 4.5m
  • Vehicles transporting dangerous goods

Do not change direction or reverse.

Remember that changing direction is completely banned on the M30. However, there are frequent exits that allow you to leave the motorway and change direction.

Driving in reverse is also not permitted in M30 tunnels. Driving in reverse would block the normal flow of traffic in the tunnel and is extremely dangerous due to the lack of visibility.

No stopping except in emergencies

Additionally, stopping is not permitted in the tunnels or surface of the M30, except in emergencies.

Make sure you use dipped headlights

Remember to always use your dipped headlights in the tunnels. And be aware that using full beam headlights is not permitted so as not to dazzle other road users. Additionally, remember that sunglasses drastically reduce visibility, so you must not use them in M30 tunnels.

Do not use your horn except in dangerous situations

In M30 tunnels, as on all roads, the horn is only to be used to prevent danger. This avoids misunderstandings or not taking sound warnings seriously.

In addition to these tips, here are some more articles to ensure you drive safely in M30 tunnels and know how to react to traffic hold-ups, accidents or breakdowns, and fires.
