The City Council of Madrid has stated that of the 100 bridges and walkways, 120 walls and 258 metallic structures and overhead traffic signs on the M-30, 90% are in perfect condition.
Achieving this improvement has been a challenge, with Emesa playing an important role in the process. The key to achieving this has been the development of a Structure Maintenance Policy, together with the engineering company specialised in LRA structures, and then applying it rigorously. This Policy defines the set of activities to be developed in order to maintain the structures in adequate condition throughout their useful life, differentiating between ordinary maintenance operations and renovation, rehabilitation and reinforcement operations.
In recent years, in structures alone, Emesa has overseen the drafting of 47 projects for the restoration and rehabilitation of structures.
On the one hand, the level reached by Calle 30’s structures has been possible thanks to Madrid Calle30’s execution of 21 of these projects to date, with an investment of more than 14 million euros. 70% of the construction work had already been completed in the spring of 2016, while the remaining 7 projects had been executed before the end of 2017. On the other hand, this effort was complemented by Emesa’s execution of intense maintenance work, which included not only ordinary maintenance work, but also certain extraordinary maintenance actions that have allowed additional features to be introduced to the original structure.
Every 15 months, inspections of these elements are carried out to determine their status and degree of conservation, rating their condition from 1 to 6, with 1 indicating an optimal condition and 6 meaning the structure is at its service limit. The capital’s City Council has indicated that in the last inspection carried out at the end of 2018, the vast majority of structures were in perfect condition.
Thus, 90% of the bridges and walkways under the jurisdiction of Madrid Calle 30 have an index that is equal to or less than 2. As for the walls, 80% recorded a value that was equal to or less than 2. And finally, the condition of 86% of the metallic structures and overhead traffic signs had a value that was equal to or less than 2, according to the City Council.
This impressive achievement is due, in large part, to the good work carried out by the companies outsourced by Emesa which, together with the adequate quality control implemented by the company’s structure technicians, has resulted in the very high effectiveness of the operations.
