Madrid Christmas markets

Christmas is getting closer and we want you to discover one of the traditional plans during this period. Visiting Madrid’s Christmas markets is almost a must if you are in the capital during the festive period.

There are markets for all tastes, ages and for all budgets. If you are still not sure what to get your loved one and don’t want to resort to the traditional mass shopping centres, then take a look at our suggestions.

Must-see Christmas markets in Madrid

Plaza Mayor Market

Let’s start with the Plaza Mayor market, the most traditional and well-known by everyone in Madrid.

This market is located in the capital’s centre. It can be visited from Friday 23rd November and will be open until the end of the year. It is open from 9am to 10pm on working days and from 9am to 11pm on weekends.

There are 104 stands that make up this market. You can find many traditional handcrafted products to create your nativity scene at home, accessories for the Christmas tree and Christmas decorations, etc.

You can also find in the square one of the emblems of Madrid during the Christmas period: the Christmas tree all lit up decorating the square. You won’t be able to resist a photo next to it while you enjoy your shopping!

Crafts Fair in Paseo de Recoletos

This traditional crafts fair which was previously located in Plaza de España, has moved this year to Paseo de Recoletos, specifically between Plaza de Colón and Cibeles.

This market opens from the 1st to 31st December. You will also be able to find more than 170 craft stands not only from Madrid, but from other regions and parts of the world.

Among the objects you can see and purchase, if you so wish, are jewellery, ceramics, engravings, textiles, children’s toys, glass, hats, pottery, costume jewellery and book binding, among others.

This fair will be open every day from 11am to 9pm, closing on Christmas Day and Christmas Eve. On New Year’s Eve it will close from 3pm.

El Mercadillo del Gato (Cat Market)

This market is known for being one of the chicest in the city and is often packed year after year.

The highlight of this market is the large range of textile accessories you can find: scarves, pendants, wallets and purses… It’ll be impossible to not find that gift for your mum, aunt or friend!

This market is located in the Hotel Westin Palace. It will be open between the 1st and 5th December, or on 13 Gran Vía from the 14th December to the 5th January.

Molly Market

Located in the Official College of Architects of Madrid, it is one of the most attractive of the capital.

Here you will be able to find the latest in design. Many artists come here to sell their most recent creations in many formats.

You will also find clothing, jewellery and above all, original and customised gifts.

The only disadvantage of this market is that it does not last long, as it is only open on the 8th and 9th December.

Design Market

This market is in the area of Matadero throughout the whole year. But over Christmas is moves to the Glass Gallery in the Cibeles Palace, changing its name to the Design Market – Xmas Edition.

Every year this market is a real delight. You can enjoy concerts, Madrid guides, product raffles, food trucks, etc.

It will be impossible to come here and not fall in love with one of the objects on sale, as the variety and originality of each one is unbeatable.

As mentioned above, this Christmas market is located in the Glass Gallery in the Cibeles Palace only on the 8th and 9th December. Don’t miss it!

Nómada Market

Although this market is not exclusive to the Christmas period, it is adapted to the festive period to the delight of all.

The location changes each year. Right now, it is in the famous Mercado de la Cebada.

In this market you will find a combination of stands from new designers. They are ready to share their pieces and more traditional stands with food areas typical of the area of La Latina.

You can visit it on the 14th, 15th and 16th December.

Mercado de los Motores

This market alternates the area reserved for new creators with the area for showing second-hand objects and clothes.

And if that’s not enough, you can also find a food court to recharge your batteries after so much shopping. Concerts are also organised for you to enjoy music while you buy gifts for your loved ones.

This market attracts lovers of everything vintage at unbeatable prices. You can find that special piece of jewellery for your partner, a watch for your mother…

It is also a perfect market for children. You can enjoy the stands together and then, the music at the concerts.

Come to this market in the Railway Museum (Calle Delicias, 61). It will be on during the whole weekend of the 8th and 9th December.
